Major Internet Outage December 15th 2021

As of this writing on December 15th at roughly 8:12 AM there are reports of widespread service and internet outages being reported across the web. We are currently actively investigating the full extent of the rippling effect of this major event.

AWS Outage Update (12/16/2021 7:15 AM)

As the full impact and proceeding restoration of services caused by the AWS outage has been realized, we now have some more details of what exactly took place.

According to CNET’s, Erin Carson the event that caused the issue was due to an engineer’s mistake in performing traffic management actions.

First and foremost we want to extend a lot of grace to whoever the mentioned unnamed engineer is…


That being said, one could wonder why there are no protocols in place internally that would prevent (or at least warn) AWS Engineers of how such a high-impact will impact the infrastructure as a whole.

Looking into the issue in greater detail we stumbled up on this liveblog from TechRadar which was able to find a response from AWS.

We have identified the root cause of the Internet connectivity to the US-WEST-1 Region and have taken steps to restore connectivity. We have seen some improvement to Internet connectivity in the last few minutes but continue to work towards full recovery

However, it is worth mentioning that the Amazon Web Services status page has not been updated to include that they had experienced an outage in the first place. Which brings us to the ultimate question of why they are not disclosing the disruption in real-time? Thinking critically one may come to the conclusion that it defeats the purpose of having a status page in the first place.

According to tom’s guide, the outage that affected so many sites like Amazon Web Services, PlayStation Network, DoorDash, and quite a few more major service sites was resolved within the last 30 – 40 minutes.

We are still investigating other services and sites.
